Defining Twilight Essay Contest
The Basics
Essay Topic: Below are 8 vocabulary words from the first chapter of
Defining Twilight.

Permanence defining twilight Your job is to write a creative essay of no more than 1,000 words that incorporates these eight words.
You can write Twilight fan fiction or an entirely original essay.
Judging: Each essay will be judged based on:
* correct and effective use of the eight vocabulary words
* creativity
* clear communication of ideas
* correct syntax, grammar, spelling, and punctuation
Categories: There are three age categories:
1) age 13 through age 15
2) age 16 through age 18
3) age 19 and older
Prizes: One First-Prize winner and four Second-Prize winners will be selected from each age category based on the above judging criteria.
Each First-Prize winner will receive $500 and a copy of Defining Twilight
Each Second-Prize winner will receive $50 and a copy of Defining Twilight

Official Rules
EligibilityNo purchase is necessary, and there is no fee to enter or to win. The Defining Twilight Essay Contest is open to participants in three age categories: Ages 13 through 15, ages 16 through 18, and age 19 and older as of July 31, 2009. All participants must be legal residents of the United States. All participants who are minors in their state of residence must obtain the consent of a parent or legal guardian to enter the contest. By entering the contest, participants and their parents or legal guardians agree to abide by the terms of these official rules. The New Leaf Learning Center reserves the right to disqualify any participant that it determines, in its reasonable discretion, is ineligible to participate in the contest. The contest is subject to all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations, and is void where prohibited by law or regulation.
Essay Requirements
Essays must not infringe or violate any law or the legal or equitable right of any person or entity, nor contain material that infringes or violates any personal property rights of others or that constitutes defamation, invasion of privacy, an infringement of the intellectual property rights of any third person, or is otherwise unlawful.
Submissions
One entry per participant. Entries will be accepted until 11:59 p.m. EST on July 31, 2009. Essays must be submitted in the body of an email addressed to

Proof of submission will not be deemed to be proof of receipt by the New Leaf Learning Center. Lost, late, incomplete, invalid, misdirected, or technically corrupted entries will be disqualified.
The copyright in the essay will remain with the participant. By accepting a prize, participants and their parents/guardians grant to the New Leaf Learning Center a perpetual license to reproduce, edit, publish, copy, display and distribute all winning essays for advertising and promotional purposes without notice or additional compensation, except where prohibited by law.
By submitting an essay, the participant warrants and represents that all information provided by him/her as part of the contest is true, accurate and complete, and that he/she is the sole author of the essay.
Judging Criteria
Winners will be selected by employees of the New Leaf Learning Center. The likelihood of winning will depend upon the quantity and quality of all other entries as judged by the criteria stated above. The decisions of the New Leaf Learning Center are final and binding on all matters pertaining to the contest.
Awards
Prize winners are solely responsible for all taxes that may be incurred as a result of winning a prize, including, without limitation, any and all local, state, and federal income taxes.
Notification
Winners will be announced on Defining Twilight's Facebook page (http://tinyurl.com/DefTwiFacebook) on September 30, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. EST, and will be notified by email shortly thereafter. As a condition to winning a prize, the New Leaf Learning Center will require the winners to complete an affidavit of compliance and eligibility that states that such winner has complied with all of these official rules and that such winner is eligible to receive the prize. In addition, the winners will be required to sign a liability and publicity release.
If the winner cannot be contacted within five calendar days of the first notification attempt, any prize notification is returned as undeliverable, the winner or the winner's parent or legal guardian rejects his/her prize, or if consent from the winner's parent or guardian is withdrawn, then an alternate winner will be selected by the New Leaf Learning Center. Upon prize forfeiture, no payment or other compensation will be made to the original winner.
Privacy Policy
The personal information collected from participants will be used by the New Leaf Learning Center only for the purpose of administering the contest and notifying the winners, unless New Leaf Learning Center is required by law to disclose the information. Personal information is provided by participants who choose to enter the contest, with the consent of their parents/guardians, and will not be used or disclosed to any other entity for marketing or other purposes. A parent or legal guardian has the right to review, change, and/or delete the participant's personal information by contacting the New Leaf Learning Center at the address below, and to refuse to permit the New Leaf Learning Center's future collection, use, or disclosure of the participant's information. However, acceptance of a prize constitutes the permission of the winner and his/her parent or legal guardian for the New Leaf Learning Center to use his/her name, city, age, essay, and/or any statements made by each winner regarding this contest for advertising and promotional purposes without notice or additional compensation, except where prohibited by law. Conditions
By entering the contest, participants and their parents and guardians agree to release the New Leaf Learning Center and their respective employees, officers, and directors, from any and all liability for loss, harm, damage, injury, cost, or expense whatsoever, which may occur in connection with participation in this contest or any contest-related activity, or acceptance and/or use or misuse of a prize and for any claims based on publicity rights, defamation, or invasion of privacy. The New Leaf Learning Center is not responsible if a prize cannot be awarded due to delays or interruptions due to acts of war, natural disasters, weather, acts of terrorism or other any event reasonably outside its control.
Limitation of Liability
If for any reason the contest is not capable of running as planned, including infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or if any other causes corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of the contest, the New Leaf Learning Center reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to cancel, terminate, modify, or suspend the contest, as well as to disqualify any individual who tampers with the contest. The New Leaf Learning Center assumes no responsibility for any error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, delay in operation or transmission, communications line failure, theft, or destruction or unauthorized access to, or alteration of, entries. The New Leaf Learning Center is not responsible for problems or technical malfunctions of any telephone network or lines, computer online systems, servers, or providers' computer equipment, software, failure of any e-mail to be received by the New Leaf Learning Center on account of technical problems, or traffic congestion on the Internet or at any website, or any combination thereof, including any injury or damage to participant's or any other person's computer related to or resulting from participation in this contest.
Disputes
Any dispute arising out of this contest will be determined according to the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, without reference to its conflict of law principles.
