Name-Max Karl Ernst Ludwig Planck

When did they die-He died on the 4th October, 1947 aged 89
Where did they live-Kiel Germany
Why were they famous-
Although Max was ignored by the academic community, he furthered his work on the field of heat theory and discovered one after another the same thermodynamical formalism as Gibbs without realizing it
What were their theories-
Max was among the few who immediately recognized the significance of the Special theory of relativity. Thanks to his influence this theory was soon widely accepted in Germany. Planck also contributed considerably to extend the special theory of relativity.
Summarise major lifee vents-
Planck received the Nobel Prize in physics in 1918 for his quantum theory after it had been successfully applied to the photoelectric effect
by Einstein and the atom by Niels Bohr. Planck showed there were difficulties in relating the statistical theory of molecular motion to the thermodynamical approach. He also criticized the probabilistic interpretation of entropy.
He was the first to write down the equation usually attributed to Boltzmann,

) was first used by Planck in 1900. Lorentz and others called k Planck's constant until 1911 (Pais 1991, p. 60), when the term Boltzmann's constant
became generally accepted.
Planck was also a philosopher of science. In his Scientific Autobiography and Other Papers, he stated Planck's Principle, which holds that "A new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents eventually die and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it."
Five interesting facts.-
During World War II, Planck's house in Berlin was completely destroyed by bombs in 1944 and his youngest son, Erwin, was implicated in the attempt made on Hitler's life in the July 20 plot. Consequently, Erwin died a horrible death at the hands of the Gestapo in 1945. Although it is said that Erwin could have been spared had Planck joined the Nazi Party Planck took a stand and refused to join, as a consequence Erwin was hanged.
