| Ok, so NaNo starts in like, 5 hours and I still don't have a setting for my book. Basically, I want it to be in a city but not a HUGE city (meaning no NYC or LA) and I want it to sort of be in a unique location (kind of like by a desert or ocean or something). I don't know if it should be out of the US because then I'd have to change a lot of things with my plot. So can anyone help me? Please and thanks. | |

| As far as coastal places, San Francisco and San Jose come to mind...although you could also go with something like Houston or Miami (there are also a ton of cities on the east coast worth looking into that aren't NYC). Seattle's also pretty nice.
You might also consider places like Arizona (Phoenix, Tucson) or New Mexico (Albuquerque) because they've got interesting people/climates and they're often ignored. You have...a lot of options.

| Haha, I know that's my problem. I'm not good at narrowing things down :/
I'm kind of leaning towards Seattle, because I've been there a few times and know the general area. Is that too overrated though since the whole Twilight craze brought Washington into the spotlight?

| Personally, I don't think so. Twilight brought small towns and rain into the spotlight more than any specific city, and Seattle is a different enough environment that you should be fine. | |

It should be fine. | |

| Yes, but real towns give you some smidgen of credibility, Patrick. It helps suspend the reader's disbelief. | |

Tell that to Mr. Stephen King... who's basically recreated Maine with dozens of new towns and cities...

| I didn't say it's impossible. I just said it helps, especially for someone who hasn't been pretty much an automatic best-seller since his freaking first novel | |
