Biting Darkness

As the clock stroke midnight and the bells were chiming, echoing through the halls, a young receptionist of the US army moved gracefully out of her cubicle and down the corridor. She was in her early twenties with a figure many women would kill for; she had curves in all the right places. Her eyes were ones that could envy sapphires, for they were the colour of the crystal blue ocean, kept under perfectly plucked eyebrows, her lips her full and red, and her skin was a perfect pale tone, almost as if looking at an angel itself. Her hair was shiny and black; it waved to the middle of her back, and bounced as she walked.

She had black fitted pants with a white blouse on, black heels and a belt that fitted just under the bust, a golden locket was just visible under her blouse, she was given it as a child by her mother, just before she died.

She was just past security and now walking down the steps of the army base, it was a cool night and she wrapped her arms around her waist in a feeble attempt to warm herself. She paced slowly towards the alleyway which led to the army’s car park. The car park held her black Mitsubishi Lancer EVO. As she entered the alley she felt an immense darkness, almost unnatural presence close to her, almost inches from her body, closing in. Goose bumps rippled her flesh and the hair on the back of her arms and neck rose up on end. She ran the last few paces; she just entered the car park when she felt a hand grope the back of her arm. She had just entered the light of the car park; it was lit by street lamps. But she turned and couldn’t see anything but the sickly white skin on the arm of her attacker that was pulling her towards him.

The attacker pulled her back into the darkness. She fought as hard as she could but the more she fought, the more the attacker tightened his grip. He was too powerful for her. Her eyes wept tears, a sign of the rippling fear running through every nerve in her body, she started to shake. She was so frightened of what was going to happen to her. The attacker pinned her against the brick wall of the alley way. Silence dragged out for moments, she stared into black, not seeing her attacker, only the darkness that felt as if it was closing in. But then, all of a sudden a soft, almost musical voice spoke out from the dark saying, “Kasha.” She froze. He laughed.

His firm grip on her arms lessened slightly but still not enough for her to get away, his knee was pressured against her thigh as one of his hands moved from their grip on her arm. She felt it move to her neck. She wanted to scream but her throat was too dry. She gulped some air and spoke croakily to her attacker saying, “How do you know me?” He chuckled, and replied with, “Let’s just say your mother and I were umm... acquainted.” He chuckled again, almost as if it was a private joke only he knew. His hand was still steadily on her neck, she felt it move down to her golden locket, he stroked it almost as if it were a prized possession of his own. He pulled it from her neck. Silence dragged onwards.

Finally he broke it, kasha flinched as his soft musical tone cut through the air saying, “Your mother fought more then you have so far.” He spoke more to himself then to
her, she whimpered and started hyperventilating - her mother had been murdered, only two puncture wounds were found in her neck, no blood on the floor of the alley where she was discovered yet, the hospital said her blood was drained completely-

He knew she was revising his last statement, knowing that she was wondering when she was going to die a little less more then how she was going to die. He could feel her shaking beneath him. He laughed again, deep and hollow. She shook rapidly as his face moved more and more towards her, she still wasn’t able to see because of the deep darkness surrounding her. She could feel his cold breath on her neck, she didn’t notice how cold it was until then, the adrenaline had made her immune to any other feelings except him. His breath felt as if it came quicker the closer and closer he came to her, it was almost exactly in time with her heart, which felt as if was going to jump from her throat. His lips touched her skin, somehow she knew this was it, she wasn’t sure why. She closed her eyes. She felt his lips part.

She counted... One... Two... Three... then it burned. Her neck felt as if it were on fire. She still couldn’t scream. His whole body went rigid against her, his full force stopping any movement her body tried to make. She was a lot like her mother he noticed. She fought consciousness, and lost. The battle was won. He drank as easily as if from a cup after she gave in to the darkness. His thirst was quenched. Like mother like daughter he thought as he felt the alley way. He was the higher predator in this food chain. She never came around. She died in that alley way just as her mother had died. Painfully! As she took her last breath she knew that her death was never going to be fully understood, how no one would believe the horror of how it happened. She gasped her last breath. Kasha was gone and so was the higher predator of the night.
